For Cats Only

These are cat-sized food bowls, inspired by an overage of cats in my house right now. I goofed a bit in applying the black glaze to the outside of the footprint bowl. Rubbing off the overspillage on the inside of the bowl didn’t work out so well. I think I should have painted on the glaze for more control. I didn’t try to do anything fancy with the mouse bowl. The black glaze, dipped, stayed on the outside of the bowl where it should be. To produce the gray color on the mouse, I mixed a tiny bit of black underglaze with some white.

There is an s-crack on the bottom of the footprint bowl, but not all the way through. The bowl is functional.

A Pitcher to Go with the Cup

DSCN5157

Just practicing different shapes of pots AND handles. I made this creamer to go with my similarly glazed cup after watching a lesson in class on making handles. I couldn’t quite do it the way the teacher did, which was to attach the handle to the top of the pot, then pull it into shape while it’s hanging down from the pot (!!). I found I didn’t have enough hands for that one. Had to pull the misshapen handle off the pot while I could still rescue the operation and make a freestanding handle to attach. Next, a sugar bowl? I learned how to make lids…need some practice though.

Handle Practice

Handles are my current bane. It seems that many people feel the same way, and I’ve even heard seasoned potters say they stay away from them. The pot part of the orange cup was perfect; the handle not so much. It almost ended up in the trash, but then I decided not to miss an opportunity to experiment with glazes. It’s a balanced, useful cup were it not for the artistic handle! The white cup had a handle, but it fell off. Now it’s a non-pewter Jefferson cup.

The bowl has lopsided “ear” handles. Need to take a hand-building class at some point! Still, fun.
